Nature

Between the land and the sky

The mountain peaks in the Kolašin region stick out to the skies. From Jablan’s peak on Sinjavina Mt.,2203 meters above sea level, you have commanding view of Durmitor, Bjelasica, Komovi Mounts… Kučki (2484) and Vasojevićki peaks (2461) on Komovi Mts. Are even higher. Bjelasica Mount’s peaks are not much lower: Crna: 2139, Zekova: 2117, Troglava: 2072, and Ogorela Glava is 1988 above sea level. It is almost like the mountains are competing in the race to reach the skies and so, Kapa Moračka rises at 2227 and Maganik Mt. with Medjedji peak follows with the height of 2130 meters.
With snows from their slopes, the hight mountains supply numerous rivers, streams and springs that force their way through the hills like crystal adornments catching sunlight and serving and mirrors to the mountains and sky. As if they are jealous of each other, flow to opposite directions bringing their water resources to the Adriatic and to distant the Black Sea respectively.
In the Kolašin Municipality, the Tara River is quiet and placid but, at the times of heavy rains and sudden melting of snow, it can become a raging torrent. The Tara River originates from two smaller rivers, the Veruša and the Opasnica by Han Garančić. They join nearby Han Garančić  and form a larger river – the Tara. Near Mateševo, the Tara takes in the Drcka, the Skrbuša by the namesake place, then Pješčanica, the Pčinja before Kolašin , the Svinjača by the town, and then the Plašnica and the Bukovica. After than, it continues to flow across the territory of the neighboring municipality of Mojkovac until it finally reaches Šćepan Polje (i.e. Field) through the world famous canyon, where it meets the Piva River and flows further on as the Drina River.
The Morača River, less than a hundred kilometers long, is the biggest tributary of Skadarsko Lake. Its source is at the height of 975 meters above sea level. In the Kolašin region, the Morača’s tributaries are the Koštanica, Sjevernica, Trnovačka Rijeka(i.e. River), Javorski Potok (i.e. Brook), and the Slatina, on the Mrtvica, Ibrištica, Ratnja, and the Slatina, on the left, and the Mrtvica, Ibrištica, Ratnja and the Požanjski Potok (i.e.Brook) on the right. Apart from the Morača’s Platije Canyon, its right-hand tributary the Mrtvica also flows, for the most part of its length, trough a lesser known high canyon of breathtaking beauty.
The ‘‘Mountain Eyes‘‘ – the lakes in Bjelasica and Trebiješ. Mts. complete the picture of water wealth of this region. Biogradsko Lake is the best known among them, a glacier lake by origin, situated at 1094 meters above sea level. With the coast over 25 hectares and it is over 12 meters deep. The Biogradsa Rijeka (i.e. River) flows into the Lake, and the Jezerštica flows out of it, flowing into the tara River.
There are other lakes on Bjelasica Mt., such as Veliko (i.e. Big) and Malo (i.e. Small) Ursulovačko, Šiško and Malo (i.e. Small) Šiško and Pešića Lake, which are administratively not a part of the Kolašin Municipality. Near the peak of Trebiješe Mount, at 1678 meters above sea level, there lies Kapetanovo Lake that is over 35 meters deep. Its coast is, depending on water levels, as much as 1800 meters long. Not far away and at even higher altitude (1773m), there is the almost impenetrable Brnjičko or Manito Lake, about 22 meters long and 14 meters wide.
Apart from the rivers and lakes, the big wells, springs and short, impenetrable and, therefore, less known watercourses draw attraction, which, down the big and small waterfalls, down the steep cliffs of canyion, pour down into the brooks and rivers. The well Bijeli Nerini is located in the right tributary of Morača, the Mrtvica canyon, and the Bogutovski Otok also falls through the cut stone gutter in the Platije Canyon directly into the Morača River. The Muminova Voda (i.e. Water) is a big spring in Ključ Mt. and the well on the right bank of theTara's tributary, the Svinjača, is also known from legends. The territory of Kolašin Municipality is also rich in other natural beauties, many of them still little known and insufficiently explored. There is Vranštica Cave nearby the Rovačko village Mrtvo Duboko. In the vicinity of Velje village there is another cave - Leura. Eternal ice can be found in the cave in Umovi, 1945 meters above sea level. Legends related to this cave make it even more mysterious.
Wind and water, like unparalleled sculptors, have carved marvelous shapes into the stones of this region making these surroundings a unique natural gallery.
